My Ostrich Pillow Review

When I first saw the ostrich pillow I thought… what the (explicative) is that!?

It was actually a gift from my sister that my mom was about to tear up, literally, to use as stuffing for a bean bag, however, curiosity got the better of me and I took to google so I could  figure out what the heck I was looking at.

Little did I know, the Ostrich Pillow was an up and coming travel pillow that started on kickstarter.com and completely SMASHED their pledged goal of $70,000 to turn this idea into a reality… Let that sink in…

So where was I in the curiosity part? Oh thats right! I had to figure out how this thing worked and WHY?

According to Studio Banana, the makers, the ostrich pillow is a travel pillow… THAT YOU WEAR ON/OVER YOUR HEAD and it’s designed for you to sleep (obviously-its a pillow after all) anywhere life takes you.

Being the unconventional illy that I am, I decided to put this pillow to the test and determine for myself if the comfort was worth its value.

So at this point you might be asking yourself, how’d it go illy? is it comfortable? Does it help you sleep? Is it worth the monies? Did it find your soulmate?

To answer your questions; Surprisingly good. Yes. Yes. Whats your budget? l’ll get back to you on that.

but a review wouldn’t be a review without explaining all the pros and cons, so lets get to it!

Is it comfortable?

Although it looks ridiculous in design its actually very comfortable to wear, believe it or not I actually fell asleep in this thing AND it did wonders for my migraine.

Let me be clear, it did not CURE my migraine but the cocoon like design cradled my head just right.

For me, the combination of darkness and reduced/muffled noise made my migraine episode better than most. But what if you don’t suffer from migraines, is the Ostrich Pillow still a good fit for you?

Absolutely, if you have the right budget for it. In fact I think theres a number of benefits for anyone who doest mind a few public stares.

For starters, as I mentioned earlier, its unconventional shape allows for a feeling of seclusion by successfully reducing noise, blocking light and practically gift wrapping your head all whilst still being able to breathe.

And if being gift-wrapped hasn’t sold you, let me add that the design allows for you to comfortably lay your head anywhere, even directly faced down on your desk. PLUS the built-in hand compartments (yeah you read the right) are great for keeping your hands warm as well as scratching and/or massaging your head.

According to Studio Banana, the hand compartments, allow for the optimal sleeping position therefor maximizing sleep efficiency. who knew!?

In short, I think The Ostrich Pillow is a great product for anyone who doest mind wearing a questionable looking travel pillow. At the very least check it out before making any final judgements.

How much does it cost?

Remember when I mentioned budget? I think I mentioned it twice, well I wanted to explain the benefits of the product and peek your interest to soften the blow before revealing the price.

Depending on the website/seller The Ostrich Pillow price range can vary anywhere from $80-$100, with knockoff brands selling their own versions at a lower cost, but keep in mind that it may not be from the original manufacturer or made of the same quality.

With that said Studio Banana also offers a range of other Ostrich Pillow designs that are less expensive, more compact and maybe even better suited to your specific needs.

What other styles do they offer?

Aside from the original Ostrich Pillow, there are at least five other pillows (at time of writing) to choose from based on your personal needs.

These pillows include the Ostrich Pillow Go, Ostrich Pillow Light, Ostrich Pillow Mini, Ostrich Pillow Loop and Ostrich Pillow Hood.

To give you a better idea of the differences between them, here’s a brief description of each pillow.

Ostrich Pillow Go

When it comes to design the ostrich pillows go looks very similar to a neck brace or scarf, however it’s thick padding offers good support for sleeping and light traveling.

it’s soft memory foam like construction is very comfortable around the neck and cradles it to provide a very soothing experience while making sure the head is properly supported.

Aside from the pillow itself (which comes with the option of 4 different colors) the package also comes with a compact carrying tote that can be quickly attached to a carry on or duffle bag while traveling reducing the risk of accidentally leaving your pillow behind.

Ostrich Pillow Light

The ostrich pillow light shares some similarities with the pillow go, however it’s a bit looser around the neck and offers a completely singular design with an open hole for covering your eyes (headband style) or putting it around your neck.

Design-wise the ostrich pillow light is lightweight, adjustable and reversible allowing for a very custom fit that can accommodate to your specific needs.

While the pillow light does not come with a carrying case its circular/holo design makes it easy to be thrown over your luggage handles so you don’t have to waste space in your suitcase.

And for those who aren’t fans of the original color this pillow is available in 5 unique colors to match your wardrobe or personality.

Ostrich Pillow Mini

The ostrich pillow mini is designed to be used with your hand/forearm and its unique design covers the arm like a padded glove, which you can use to rest your head for a quick nap.

Unlike the other pillows the mini is not designed to be used on or over your head. It’s specifically designed to accommodate the hand/arm for optimal portability.

In terms of size and function the ostrich pillow mini is a bit smaller than the average forearm and offers a slot to slip over your wrist , forearm or elbow, so that it can also be used as an arm rest while typing on a computer.

For those who do not wish to attach the pillow to their arm they can still use it as a portable pillow to prop their head up against a wall or on top of a desk.

The ostrich pillow mini is available in 3 stylish colors for those pesky (i mean) conscious buyers who have a favorite color in mind.

Ostrich Pillow Loop

How do I describe the ostrich pillow loop. It’s kind of like wrapping an X across your face for optimal blackout efficiency.

It’s X like design contributes to it’s unique blackout feature, which give you the sense of escape and restfulness.

Hey hey. I’m trying to sell it. Do you look ridiculous yes. But is your sleep of primary concern. Than deal with it. i kid. i kid.

Back to the description. This pillow offers extreme softness and takes advantage of a velcro closure for easy adjustability.

Let’s talk colors. You like colors right. Well this pillow comes with a shocking selection. You can choose between an emerald-ish green, an emerald-ish green or an emerald-ish green, so yeah…. there’s that.

All jokes aside this is probably my favorite pillow in terms of design, and possibly function, but i’ll get back to you on that.

Anyway if you need a soft pillow burrito for your head than this is it.

Ostrich Pillow Hood

Finally, there’s the ostrich pillow hood, which as you guessed it is basically a hood.

It’s a hood. It’s a head sock. It’s a hood like head sock that I can’t really say much about, but if you like to wear hoods or have a sweater that doesn’t have a hood this can be an add on piece so you feel a little more complete.

According to the website it gives you a sense of privacy in public and can be used in conjunction with any of the other pillows for a more wholistic restful experience.

What colors does it come in you ask? TWO colors. That’s it, but it’s better than one.

Which style is right for you?

Honestly, there is no perfect pillow for every situation.

Each of the ostrich pillows serve their own unique purpose and is designed to accommodate different needs.

Where do you spend the majority of your time and often find yourself needing to take a rest.

It’s all about catering to your needs and where you like to take your naps, so take a look at your busy schedule and choose a pillow that will best suit your favorite napping environment.

Where can I buy one?

So you’ve made it this far. Good for you. It sounds like you’re really curious about where you can buy one.

Well the good news is Amazon carries most (if not all) of the pillows offered by Studio Banana.

If however you prefer to buy the pillow directly from the source you can go to OstrichPillow.com where they offer their full selection along with detailed information of how each pillow works and what situations it’s best used for.
